South Hero Day 25-26

February 3rd and 4th, 2023

We woke up to -3F (-19C)but it felt like -20F (-29C) with the wind chill. It got colder every hour. By 4pm, it was -12F (-24C) but felt like -36F (-38C) with the wind chill. When we went to bed, it was -15F (-26C) but felt like -40F (-40C) with the wind chill. It was also very windy and even though the bay was now frozen, the open lake wasn’t so we had quite a show of steam devils (low clouds/freezing fog) moving very quickly at the horizon. It looked like tornadoes formation. Quite beautiful to watch. Pogo went to White Beach to drone it.

We went to Wally’s for breakfast and I decided to cancel my lunch with my friend Debbie because of the cold and slippery roads. We ended up talking for 2 hours on the phone instead.

Bob and Heather facetimed us and we caught up for awhile, then we met Elaine and Mike at the Blue Paddle for an early dinner. It has been nice to reconnect with friends and family while in town.

I talked to Martin about tante Lise and the oncologist thinks that she can start the light chemo treatment as soon as they remove the liquid on her lungs. If she doesn’t hear from them by Monday, Martin will bring her at the emergency to take care of it as soon as possible. I confirmed with him that we would be visiting her on Sunday and Monday.

We have been watching The Last of Us, a post-apocalyptic fiction and drama series, and the 3rd episode made me cried. Maybe I was crying because I was really cold but I’m not sure.

Saturday morning, I went in the garage attic to look for some old pictures belonging to my parents, hoping to find some of our first house on Ile Ste-Thérèse but had no luck. It was not an easy tasks as my parents boxes were under a bunch of heavy boxes. Pogo went on the lake and droned himself walking on the frozen ice. He came back not too long after holding his hands in pain because of the extreme cold.

Irene, our neighbor, contacted us from Florida to let us know that the heat in their South Hero house was only 34F. She asked Pogo to go look at the meter to see if they had run out of gas but it was half full. They sent a plumber to check the heater and he found out that the pipes in the master bath, on the 2nd floor had burst and the water went through the kitchen ceiling. Servpro was on their way to repair the water damages. I feel so bad for them! Especially after having a lot of damages at their Florida home caused by the hurricane in the fall.

We met Shaun and Ashley at JRs in Williston for a late lunch, after having stopped at Xfinity to switch our cable box which was still not working properly. I gave them an early Valentine’s present and said our goodbyes. We will see them again only in two months. 😦

I did a little laundry and packed a few warm clothes for the next 2 days in St-Jean. We binge watched the 4 episodes of 1923 with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.
