Holbox, Mexico -Day 3

Playa Punta Cocos

December 18, 2023

We met for breakfast at 9am without Max because we all know she is not an early riser (déjà vu?) then went to discover more of the town, being another very windy day meaning no beach day.

Pogo and Shaun bought some t-shirts and hats. We went to check out the location of Tara Tara, a tiki bar Pogo had found online and since they were open, we decided to have juices and smoothies which were served in tiki glasses. We made plans to come back later on that night. The water in the street in front of the bar was really deep and jokingly I ask the waiter if they were sharks in it and he said no but there are crocodiles! Haha! Michel was soon to find out. We had just left when a gust of wind blew his hat away straight into another deep puddle of water and Edward went to retrieve it and came back in one piece. Luckily it was only about 6 inches of water instead of the 2 feet in front of the bar.

Max met us at Roots, a pizza place for lunch. We had 3 pizzas between the 6 of us. Pogo and I ordered half Al Pastor and half Oaxaquaen and it was delicious.

We went back to our hotel, changed into our bathing suits and walked to the town square to get some taxis to bring us to the beach Punta Cocos. It took a while to convince two of them to bring us as the roads going there were extra flooded. They also charged us 400 pesos ($23 US) per taxis each way so it was worth it for them. It was quite the adventure! Multiple times we had water inside the ATVs covering our feet and thought at some point that we could tip over because of the angle we found ourselves in. Those guys knew exactly where to drive.

They dropped us off at a pathway to the beach and we walked about 15 minutes to a little bar with lounge chairs. It was nice because that side of the island was mostly protected from the wind so we enjoyed sitting in the sun for a while. We saw a lot of big horseshoe crabs. The waiter came to take our drink order just a few minutes before we had to leave so we drank our margaritas in about 2 minutes and walked back to meet our taxi drivers at 4pm as planned.

Our driver decided to give us a thrill on the way home and drove in even more deep water and heard us scream and laugh like as if we were on a Disney ride. Max took great videos of it.

We rested, meaning some napped and one wrote a blog, for a few hours then we met at 6:30pm. We decided on a progressive dinner. We had appetizers at Big Fish and the main courses at Raices, both seafood restaurants. We finished the evening at the tiki bar. Max and Shaun walked back home and the rest of us took a taxi back.
