Holbox, Mexico – Day 1

Holbox

December 16, 2023

We left the house at 3am for our godforsaken 5am flight. We were at the airport at 3:30am to find out that security doesn’t open until 4am. All that to say we were the first in line. Our connecting flight was in JFK and we arrived in Cancun around 1pm. Custom was through a glass machine thingy reading your passport first then scanning your face so no interaction with a human and no stamps. It went quickly.

We had a beer and some chips and salsa outside the airport while waiting for Max to pick us up with the minivan we had rented for the week. We went to get a few snacks and drinks for the drive ahead, went back to the airport to pick Michel and Edward up and drove 2h30 hrs to Chiquila to take the ferry to Holbox which took about 30 minutes.

According to Max, the region had had a lot of rain recently and the streets in Holbox were totally flooded and/or covered in mud. The taxis were all ATVs to handle the water and potholes.

We arrived at our hotel La Palapa just in time before the reception closed at 7pm due to their annual New Year party. Their restaurant was also closed.

It was really windy. We walked around town, avoiding the water and the splatter from the taxis and had dinner at a taco place. Afterwards Michel and Edward went to bed and Pogo, Max, Shaun and I had a drink at a tiny bar on the side of a street. We also went to bed pretty early, all exhausted from a long day of travel.
