St-Emilion, France Day 13

October 7, 2023

We slept in and woke up to seeing Max’s Instagram story about a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Oaxaca. Her guests and her were fine thank goodness!

We went for breakfast at 10am since we were still full from our extravaganza dinner last night.

We spent the afternoon driving around, between vineyards. Certainly not as pretty as the Perigord region we were in a few days ago. We stopped briefly in Pomerol then spent a few hours discovering St-Emilion. We did a little shopping and we shared a burger at a busy café. You really go there for wines. Everywhere you look there are wine stores or places to sample them.

Pogo had found a few vineyards to stop at for wine testing on our way back. The first 2 were closed despite the fact that online they were telling us they were open. Pogo wanted to go back to the hotel but I said let’s try one more. It just happened that last vineyard he brought us to, Château Montlabert, was about to start a tour in English for three couples so we decided to join in. It was very interesting to learn about their wine process and to see their newly renovated facilities. They had just finished picking all the grapes and the employees were having ‘le repas de Gerbaude‘, the end of the season celebration meal they all share together.

The 1 1/2 hr tour ended with a wine tasting of 3 wines. They were good but we didn’t like them enough to purchase a bottle.

We came back to the hotel at 4:30pm, Pogo took his nap then went to drone over our hotel. We had a drink outside then went to their wine bar for dinner. The venue was very plain to say the least but the food was fine. We shared a crudités bowl and a croque monsieur.

We took a shower and we packed our suitcases as we were planning on leaving at 6am to go to Bordeaux to return the car and to catch our train to Paris. Uunfortunately we won’t have time to visit Bordeaux.
