November 2 2022
Pogo and I had a small breakfast in one of the courtyards of the hotel then Max and Hernan picked us up to go to the biggest market in Oaxaca called Mercado de Abastos because Max wanted to have memelas from that woman that has been on the Food Network. Unfortunately today was a holiday and most shops were closed. We bought a bag to carry on our purchases.
We went to another market, Mercado 20 de Novembre, and shared a tlayuda especial. It had all kind of meat on it and made me think of a pizza but on a crispy tortilla. We then went to another stall and ordered a platter of grilled meat. We went to find a place to sit and they brought us grilled beef, pork and chorizo accompanied with tortilla, avocado and grilled onions.
We went back to the house and help Max pack her suitcases and we made sure that everything was picked up. We dropped her bags at their hotel (they had decided to stay at an hotel last night instead of going back to the house) then went to her friends Anna and Brooks to pick up a box of stuff she had left there. They own a house in Oaxaca that they paid $40,000 for, 5 years ago, and it is build on a steep hill, cement floors, cement block furniture, open to nature and they have 5 dogs. I just couldn’t do that. Good for them.
We went back to our hotel, walked around the beautiful grounds and found out that the hotel used to be a convent built in 1576, was abandoned in the 19th century, was used for municipal offices and in 1970 was converted into an hotel. Pogo rested for awhile and I started writing my blog. I still have a cough and I hope it will be gone by the time we fly on Friday!
We met with Max and Hernan and had dinner on the rooftop of Tierra del Sol. After dinner we walked around the artisans stalls, saw lots of great costumes, decorations and altars.
We stopped for a drink on the way back to the hotel in a quiet little bar. It felt good not to be surrounded by hundreds of people.

Sweet relaxing day before the long trip home
