Oaxaca, Mexico – Day 9

October 26 2022

We all had a great night sleep.  We relaxed until 10ish.

There wasnโ€™t any hot water when I tried to take my shower. Max went downstairs to turn the water heater on and the water was hot for 15 seconds then turned really cold but eventually was just warm enough. Max told the owner and she said that she would send someone at 11:15am.  Mind you that she had said the house wasnโ€™t ready because fixing the water heater had taken too long yesterdayโ€ฆwe waited until 11:35am and as we were leaving, the co-owner arrived to fix the heater. Max explained to him what the problem was and he said he would change the heater, which he did!

We walked to Centro and went to an organic market for breakfast.  This place has always been a favorite to Max. We tried memelas for the first time. They consisted of fresh blue corn tortillas with different toppings. Max picked chorizo and cheese, skirt steak and pumpkin flowers. We also had cafe de olla and agua fresca, cantaloupe for Max, pineapple and passion fruit for Pogo and pineapple and guava for me.

We walked around town and ran into a few friends of Max, both tour guides.ย We saw a few Tiliches, Max is obsessed with them. Roughly translated, it is a person in rags representing the poor working class.

It was quite humid so we stopped for more agua frescas mid afternoon.

We did some shopping as well and Pogo bought 2 shirts, Max bought a top and I bought a few gifts. As usual in Mexico for me, I tripped over an uneven cobblestone and I think I invented a new dance. I have no idea how i didnโ€™t do a face plant.

We had dropped our dirty clothes at the laundromat and thought they would be ready at 4pm. When we returned to pick them up, the attendant told us it was 4pm tomorrow.

We came back to the house at 4:30pm and rested until 6pm when we left to meet up with Maxโ€™s friend for dinner. Eric was waiting for us outside his place and it was another 5 minutes walk to the restaurant called Levadura de Olla. I forgot to take pictures of the food but we shared tamales, short ribs, beef mole and a tomato platter. We also shared 2 desserts..  the portions were small but we were full when we left the restaurant. As we were walking back to Ericโ€™s place, we ran into Ian, another good friend of Maxโ€™s. Itโ€™s so fun to finally meet all the friends I heard so much about. We chatted for awhile then Eric offered to drive us back to our place. He actually dropped us off a few blocks away and we just walk to rest of the way.
