Atlixco, Mexico – Day 7

October 24 2022

Pogo and I had coffee and croissants at the hacienda’s restaurant this morning and enjoyed being the only ones there. We left about 10:45am to discover Atlixco.

First we were planning to walk up to a church all the way to the top of the hill. We walked up beautiful steep stairs and walk up a colorful street full of murals. Max bought a mask in a cute shop where the artist was painting a life size skeleton.

When Max had told us about the walk up the hill, she said it would take 15 minutes.  Right, if you are an Ironman athlete maybe!  And it was all going up steep stairs with no railings.  My bad hip and Pogo’s bad foot were totally panicking. The deliberations didn’t last very long and Max went to get the car back and we drove as high as we could on the switchback narrow street.

From there, it took us another 45 minutes to make our way to the top. (15 minutes, really?) Once there, we found out that the church was closed and that it was too cloudy to see the volcano. We had been told that it’s usually better during the winter to see it but we were hoping nonetheless.  I have included a picture of it that Max took last year. I also took one last night at Brilla over the fence.  I took a ton of pictures of pretty murals and gorgeous views of the town below, on our walk back down the hill.

We drove down to the Zocolo, or center of town, walked for awhile and found a tiny restaurant to have lunch. We shared a torta Tropicana or the biggest sandwich I have ever seen or had!  It had ham, chicken, chorizo, so much cheese, pineapple as well as tomatoes, avocado and onion.  We also shared a pitcher of hibiscus water. It was all delicious but we could hardly eat half of it.

It was difficult to continue walking after that, we were so full. We still did and I took so many more pictures. Atlixco is so pretty!

We found out that Penny had surgery today because her abscess came back even worse than before. She will have a drain for 5 days. I’m so sad. Sending her so much love.
we came back to the hotel around 4:30pm and rested for awhile. Pogo spent some time droning over the hacienda at dusk. We were planning to go to the hotel restaurant but Pogo started to feel a little under the weather so he decided to go back to the room instead. After drinking a lot of water, he felt much better so it probably was a little dehydration. Max and I went for dinner anyway and both had salads as we were still pretty full from lunch. We shared a delicious dulce de lèche lava cake with a mezcal ice cream.
We had another great day and went to bed pretty early as we will have a 5 hours drive tomorrow to get to Oaxaca.
