Mexico – Day 87

Marta and her friend Lettie arrived 45 minutes early….Good thing we were mostly ready for the day. Max was still sleeping so I had to wake her up. We had started going through food, spices and sauces that we weren’t going to have time to eat and wanted to give to Marta. She was as appreciative as always. She told us that last summer she had had heart problems and surgery and started to eat better. She took all the food anyway.

There was action on the beach with a a dozen people cleaning the sand, then a few policemen showed up and were talking with a couple who were leaving red papers on the sand. There is now a wooden path from the public access for handicaps as well as 2 garbage cans. They also put the chairs back by the palapas but still no ropes.

When Grumpy, I mean Max, was ready, we left to go for a drive on a pretty cloudy day. We found a little bakery in Bucerias and got almond croissants. We stopped in Valle de Banderas to take pictures and had carnitas sitting in the plaza.

We went through San Juan de Abajo and Los Colomos stopping here and there to take pictures. The water from the little dam we like to stop by was too low to spill on the road. The gate for the “restaurant” on the side of the Ameca River was opened so we went in to take pictures. What a difference from the first time we stopped with Derrick and Deidre. The river was almost dried. There wasn’t anyone there so we left quickly.

Pogo decided to discover a new road that would take us across the river. We went through fields of corns and melon for miles on rough roads then finally arrive at the river and decided to cross it. The “road” was now made of deep sand and rocks. Our minivan wasn’t a 4 wheel drive. On my request, we stopped so Pogo could walk the path to see if it made sense to continue driving. Our google map was showing that we were in the river. He came back and said we had 50/50 chances of making it. We didn’t like the odds so we turned back. Going up the bank was nail biting.

The loop took us to Puerto and we stopped to have a torta ahogada for lunch. Max had been surprised to hear that we had never had one. We had been searching for a place ever since. It was basically a thick sub sandwich with carnita and cheese sitting in a sauce almost like a hot chicken sandwich. I had to eat it with a fork and knife. It was fine but not the best thing I’ve ever had. Max was disappointed as well. I guess it all depends of where you eat.

We stopped at a new Japanese restaurant called Yeo to make a reservation for Sunday. They are not officially opened until April 12 but are doing a soft opening.

We sat outside on the balcony to watch the sunset and had cheese and crackers. It was chilly again with the wind. We had burgers while watching 3 episodes of Bad Vegan on Netflix.
