Mexico – Day 71

We met for breakfast at the hotel restaurant at 9am then checked out of the hotel. We wanted to finish the loop of little villages we had not had time to visit yesterday.

Our first stop was La Quemada, a dusty little village. We found the sad looking centro and moved on. Pogo found a dirt road out of town and droned over the agave fields.

Next was San Andrés. It was bigger and totally typical of an untouched Mexican town. Men were sitting on benches in the town square. Pogo bought some fried pig fat called chicharron. We crunched our way out of the village.

We then stopped at Estancia de Ayones and found a little café to get a soda. They had a bullfight ring but you could tell it had not been used in years. I’m glad we stopped to these 3 villages but there wasn’t anything special about them that I would want to go back.

We went back to Etzatlan so Pogo could drone over it. Josée and I had to go to the bathroom so while walking in town, we ran into the lady that gave us the tour yesterday at the cultural center. She was selling individual crocheted pieces of the woven canopy. She showed us the framed Guinness World Record but she didn’t recognize us. Those darn masks! Haha!

Our next stop was Jala, a Pueblo Mágico. The center was very pretty. Instead of the typical flags, the narrow street had reversed baskets with dangling ribbons and a light bulb inside of them. The church was closed so we couldn’t go visit. We walked around, bought a few snacks and left.

An hour later, we were in Compostela, also a Pueblo Mágico. It was founded in 1540 and has a population of almost 18K people. We visited the square, the church and found a little restaurant where we had a margarita.

After driving for over an hour going downhill on the highway, surrounded by huge trucks, one going almost out of control behind us, we arrived in San Pancho at 6:30pm to have dinner at Zenizas. We all had ribs. We were sitting on the street and couldn’t get enough of people watching. We saw the beach bums and the hippies covered in tattoos walking bare feet back home, the tourists looking for restaurants, the cars and trucks backing up from the beach, trying not to hit the street performers.

We made it back to Nuevo right after 9pm, exhausted but very happy with our escapade.

Meanwhile, Shaun made his first batch of maple syrup back home.
