Mexico – Day 36

Pogo left at 7:30am to walk around town before it got crowded. I started writing yesterday’s blog. Uploading my pictures has been an annoying issue on this trip.

We met Derrick and Deidre for breakfast at 8:30am, took a taxi to the bus station and after an 4 hours ride, we arrived in Guadalajara at 2:30pm. We took a Uber to our hotel called Casa Pedro Loza. Pogo and Derrick had stayed here 2 years ago and had had incredible rooms. This time around, the picking was slim and the last 2 rooms available were small but still with a unique character. The boys were a little disappointed.

We took a walk around the center of town. I have to admit that after visiting San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, Guadalajara didn’t impress me. Seeing Jack Sparrow and Woody in a square trying to made money by taking pictures with people or a ”singer” holding a speaker screaming songs wearing a sombrero, wasn’t what i was expecting. It made me think of just being in another big city. Pogo was worried about pickpockets so i hardly took any pictures.

We stopped at an outdoor restaurant and had a beer and guacamole which ended up being old avocados cut in big squares with absolutely no seasonings at all. We went to a big indoor market and Deidre bought a few leather purses for her store and Pogo a t-shirt.

We took a taxi back to the hotel and the driver who didn’t speak english, kept showing us old pictures of the University and other landmarks from 80 years ago. He was talking so fast that even Pogo couldn’t understand a word.

We rested until 7pm and met D & D down the lobby. A Uber brought us to a fancy schmanzy restaurant called Bruna. In the middle of the restaurant, there was a path through a huge garden with bonsais, cactus and a few poppies. All the drinks were mixed at the tables with smoke and different interesting bitters. Someone next to us had a glass in the shape of an ice cream cone with cotton candy on top. The liquor was poured over then the server used a smoke gun to make a bubble of smoke representing the ice cream. As i said, very fancy and entertaining. Again we ate way too much! We shared a mole sample, a salad and curried mussels. Then I had a fish called totoaba al pastor that was outstanding Pogo and Derrick had a pork dish called piggy baby rose and Deidre had beef wellington. As it was dark, the photos of the food are not great. Probably our best meal so far. We got back to the hotel around 10pm.
