Mexico – Day 35

We left Casa Mia at 8am and walked down the hill to catch a cab to go to the bus station. Pogo had bought tickets online but never got a confirmation so we had decided to go early. It was a good thing because they couldn’t find us in their system. We bought 4 more tickets. We were lucky to get them as the bus was completely full. I tried to sleep as I had not slept for more than 2 hours the night before, but I couldn’t. I found out that Derrick and Deirdre had not slept at all either.

We left at 9am and our drive to Guanajuato was comfortable but nothing really nice to see. The sky was grey, the scenery was arid we didn’t see any interesting villages.

We arrived in Guanajuato at 10:20am and took a cab to our hotel called Rector located in the old town. Our room was gorgeous! High ceilings with beautiful chandeliers made me feel like we were in a castle. And I love me a castle!

We had a delicious breakfast in the courtyard then went on the rooftop, sat down and enjoyed the sun in our faces for 20 minutes. We took off around 12:30pm to discover the city. We stopped first at the Diego Rivera House Museum, one of the most revered Mexican artist. He was born in that house in 1886 and lived there only 6 years but the house was converted into a museum in 1971 by his daughter. We saw some of his earlier work, his contribution to cubism, sketches of murals and some watercolors.

The rest of the day was spent going up hundreds of stairs and steep streets to reach La Pipila monument which has a stunning overlook view of the city. I thought I was going to have a heart attack about 3 times, no 4 times….but we finally made it. It was worth it! We spend some time admiring the scenery, and me catching my breath. We took the funicular down. There is a god after all.

When we got back down, we needed refreshments. As we were sipping our drinks in a beautiful square that looked more European than Mexican, we saw a group of mariachis getting together. Pogo asked them to play our favorite song, i give you only one guess, then they played Guadalajara. They were a group of 8 powerful singers and we totally enjoyed them.

Deidre and i did a little shopping, I bought a shawl and she bought 30 leather bracelets at $1.08 each.

After resting, we met on the rooftop for a drink then went to Mestizo, a restaurant recommended by the hotel. We shared tostadas, beef carpaccio and a tomato and cheese salad. Pogo and I both had the salmon. Deidre had a poblano soup and a mushroom risotto. Derrick had a beet salad.

i was happy to finally go to bed by 9pm.
