Mexico – Day 33

The morning was spent preparing for our trip to San Miguel: packing, cleaning the fridge and giving perishable to Josée, washing sheets and picking up in case Marta comes while we are away.

Derrick and Deidre enjoyed a little walk on the beach and sitting in the sun.

We left the condo at 1:00pm and went to the gate to ask Roberto to call us a cab. Our friends were just coming back from the La Cruz Sunday market and Mario offered to drive us to the airport which was so nice!

The airport was extremely crowded. We only had carry-ons so went straight to security. They took me aside to search my suitcase and took my suntan lotion out. They told me I couldn’t have a big bottle, which I understood but I had brought it because it was almost empty. They still kept it. Deidre had a brand new one in her suitcase and they didn’t notice. Go figure. It took us a long time to find a place to sit but finally found a table by the little food court.

When we went to the gate at 2;30pm, they made us check our carry-ons. The flight was delayed by 30 minutes. We flew with Volaris, an economy airline, and it wasn’t bad but we were crowded like sardines with no legroom at all. Thank god the flight was only one hour.

While waiting for our luggage, Derrick went outside to order a big taxi. The closest airport to San Miguel is in Queretero, 1h20m away. Our driver made it in just over an hour. Our experience so far with taxi drivers is that they love driving fast and passing when other cars are coming our way!

Derrick had made a reservation at an hotel in the center of town, called Casa Mia. It had a beautiful courtyard and our suites were typical Mexican style. Really pretty. We went to the rooftop to take a picture of the sun setting and went to discover the old square. It was really crowded everywhere. We found out that it was a long holiday weekend celebrating Constitution Day which is celebrated every year, on the 5th of February since 1917. So it means it will be just as crowded tomorrow. Not the best timing to visit.

We were hungry by then so we stopped for dinner at a restaurant the boys had been to on a food tour during their motorcycle trip, called Pueblo Viejo. It had a really unique decor, as if we were in an old Mexican village. Derrick remembered a shrimp taco they had had which wasn’t on the menu and asked our waiter if they still made them. They did and he brought us one each. They were incredible. The cold “tortilla” was made of a thin slice of jicama and the topping was made of crunchy onions. Pogo had a tortilla soup followed by an ancho meatball dish. I had a pear and goat cheese salad and a shrimp and steak molcajate which was way too big to finish. I also made a new little friend called Emma. She just couldn’t stop smiling at me and her mom brought her over so we could get better acquainted.

After dinner, we walked around the square. We saw so many Mariachis entertaining the crowds. We didn’t stay long and walked back up the hill to our hotel.
