Dijon, France Day 3

Fontainebleau

September 27, 2023

We had our bag of bread for breakfast, packed our suitcases and made our way, by Uber, to the Hertz’s location at the train station. Today’s destination was Dijon.

We first stopped at Fontainebleau and I had my first fix of French chateau life envy. One room was more beautiful than the other! A feast for the eyes. We spent a few hours visiting the castle and the grounds. Much quieter than Versailles but almost as beautiful. The UNESCO heritage chateau dating from 1137 was first built as a hunting lodge and was built 500 hundred years before Versailles. It has over 1500 rooms. They also had a lot of artifacts from Napoleon which was a nice bonus.

We had a late pizza lunch around 2pm just outside the gate of the castle.

We started our drive to Dijon around 3:15 and arrived at 6pm. Our first impression of the city was really good. We went to get the keys for the Airbnb and it was challenging because we had to find the rental office, enter a code to go inside the office and enter another code to open a box where the keys were. They had a remote attached to the key ring to open the big gate doors at our Airbnb location so we could park our car inside the courtyard. Then we had to walk up 3 floors with all our luggages.

Heather had rented a beautiful place and we just sat in the living room for a while, enjoying a pastis until we were ready to go for dinner.

We went to a few restaurants but they were all booked. We finally found a place called Bouillon and it ended up being really good despite the waiter not being very nice. We all had a salad but for Heather who had the pâté de campagne. Then we all had the beef bourguignon, a local dish, but for Bob feeling contrary, who had the fish. We discovered a small part of our Dijon neighborhood at nighttime and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it tomorrow morning.

Also I realized that I put the same picture twice but don’t know how to remove it…
