El Cuyo

January 7-8-9, 2023

I hardly slept because Pogo had asked me to wear a mask since I was coughing so much. Little did he know that he already had Covid as well, confirmed when we did another test that morning. It was day 5 for me since testing positive and we don’t know exactly when Pogo started but he had loss his sense of taste on and off and he had had low energy for a few days.

We had breakfast at the hotel and decided to go to El Cuyo a day earlier to just relax and recover. I felt so bad for all the work Max had put into making us an amazing itinerary and not having the strength to do anything especially in Merida.

We at least drove the avenue of mansions on our way out of town. Actually we drove it twice because the hotel called us to say that Pogo had left his medicine there so we had to go back.

It took us 4 hrs to get to El Cuyo after losing 30 minutes in Timizin looking for a place to have lunch. They were having a festival in Centro and it was bumper to bumper and full of people everywhere. By the time we were able to find a way out of town, we still hadn’t eaten.

We arrived in El Cuyo at 4pm and Derrick and Deidre were still there. We rested and went for dinner with them at 6pm. We finished the evening at the hotel bar, catching up, then went to bed early.

Our hotel called El Cielo had a beautiful location and a nice bar/restaurant on the second floor, despite the rooms being sparse. I even forgot to the pictures of the room and the hotel. El Cuyo was a little fisherman village in the middle of nowhere and just what the doctor ordered to recuperate.

We had breakfast with Derrick and Deidre then said our goodbyes as they were flying back to the states.

We relaxed most of the morning then went for a long walk on the beach to the marina. We had lunch at La Hilary and had tostadas camarones caramelos. We walked to town then back to the hotel. Took a dip in the pool then rested some more.  We had dinner at la Casa Palma and had pizza tomozongo and sangria then came back to hotel and had an agua Fresca at the bar. We went to bed and coughed most of the night so didn’t sleep much again.

On our last full day there, we finally swam in the ocean. The water was really warm but not clear because of the waves. We just hung out at the pool until our 3pm kayaking excursion through mangroves and through a lagoon full of water lilies. It was beautiful and peaceful and we saw a great sunset.

We decided to have dinner at the hotel with an early bedtime, praying for a good night sleep.
