Oaxaca, Mexico – Day 12

October 29 2022

Pogo and I went to Chipeche again for coffee and fruits. Max and Hernan had come home at 2am so started their day around 11am.

We drove to another neighborhood called Jalatlaco and I swear I couldn’t stop taking pictures. As we approach Day of the Dead, decorations are popping up by the minute.

We stopped at a print shop that Max liked and I bought a few small prints of agave plants to put in her room in Vermont.  We saw a wedding and ran into 2 people with elaborate makeup, putting the finishing touch on their Alebrijes costumes. I took a few pictures then we saw them again later on, taking pictures with people for tips.

We drove to Onnno Loncheria for lunch.  Pogo and I shared a tuna sandwich, Max had an egg sandwich and Hernan some BLT kind of sandwich.  They were all so good!

We drove to another neighborhood to try some ice cream. It was located by a big church where a wedding ceremony was ending and the giant puppets, Tiliches, dancers and guests were waiting outside for the newly married couple to join them. Pogo decided to drone and Max and I took lots of pictures and videos. What a fun tradition to witness!

We came home around 4:45pm. Max and Hernan had to get ready for a surprise party for their friend Ian’s birthday. Pogo wanted to take a nap so we decided that we would meet them at the bar later on because they had arranged for Mariachis to perform and we were NOT going to miss out on Mariachis!

At 6:30pm we took a Didi to the terrace where they were celebrating, had a few drinks, had a great time chatting with more friends of Max, ordered a bottle of mezcal for everyone to share, watched the mariachis then left to have dinner at Los Danzantes, one of the best restaurants in town, according to Max who had made the reservation for us.  Because of the busy time of the year, they were not taking reservations but Max had arranged with her waiter friend to get us a table. It was the best meal in Oaxaca so far: tuna tartar on tostadas, some kind of shredded pork meatball that was so delicious, cheese stuffed chicken with red mole and pork ribs. Yummy!

When we left the restaurant, it was so busy on the street! Vendors everywhere, people in costumes, candles and flowers displays and just too many people. So many in fact that I wasn’t comfortable taking pictures.

We decided to find a street where traffic was moving so we could try to catch a taxi, when we ran into Max and Hernan.  We decided to walk home instead and the kids changed and went back downtown to meet up with their friends at another bar around 11pm. It was another busy and fun day!
